Get a coffee date with a book

Kwa-Thema – Bookworms and coffee lovers gathered for a coffee date with a book event at Mo’s Coffee Shop on Tuesday.

The MC, Nkosana Radebe, welcomed the attendees, saying, “A reading nation is a winning nation.”

The event was organised by the Masifunde Sonke Book Club. Joshua Twala founded multiple book clubs in the 90s and eventually formed this one.

“In 2022, we started meeting at the library every Tuesday to encourage young people to read, study and review books.

Programme librarian from Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Josephine Kodisang.

“Our book club members participated in the Funda Mzantsi Championships, and we are working with the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. They sponsor the local competitions before we go to the nationals.

“Today we partnered with Mo’s Coffee to promote reading and local businesses,” he said.

One leader of the book club, Nthabiseng Mochesane participated in the Funda Mzantsi Championship last year.

“I was reading English and Afrikaans and reviewing Afrikaans books. The championships inspired me to keep working hard at the book club so that other young people can have the experience of travelling because of reading.

Book club member Thami Mtsali said reading expands your vocabulary.

“We are promoting reading in the 12 official languages. We also have a virtual book club on WhatsApp where we share books,” Mochesane said.

She expressed her love for reading, stating it allowed her to have a conversation with everyone she met.

“The knowledge I have always surprised people. They always ask where I get my information and I always tell them it’s from reading,” she exclaimed.

The attendees enjoyed poem recitals and book reviews as they indulged in coffee.
