New writing contest for young wordsmiths

Writers between the ages of 18 and 25 are invited to submit short stories no longer than 3000 words to the NextGen writing competition.

Maskew Miller Learning has launched the NextGen short story competition to mark Youth Month.

The theme of the competition, which is open to witers aged 18 to 25, is “Accelerating collaborations and opportunities to improve the lives of the youth”, and entries close on Friday June 30.

Short stories written in one of South Africa’s official languages, and no longer than 3 000 words are eligible for entry.

In a joint statement, Maskew Miller Learning’s product and services, and human resources executives, Dr Benadette Aineamani and Ruth Shogoe, respectively, said: “The theme for Youth Month is, without a doubt more relevant today and this month – we are celebrating the past but also looking forward to collaborating and creating more opportunities for youth writing, reading and publishing. This competition grew out of that theme, and we hope and believe we’ll find an aspiring writer with a bright future.”

The competition offers one unpublished writer from South Africa the chance to be published in an eBook, a Kindle, as well as a six-month writing mentorship programme.

The shortlisted writers and the overall winner will be announced by Monday July 31, and the prize-winning story will be published on Facebook and LinkedIn by July 31 and e-book by Thursday August 31.
