This is not a drill: Suzanne Collins is writing another book set in the world of The Hunger Games.
This morning, it was announced by Scholastic that a fifth book in The Hunger Games series would be released on March 18, 2025.
The new book, titled Sunrise on the Reaping, is set 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games. , the book begins on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, aka the Second Quarter Quell.
The Second Quarter Quell is notably the year Haymitch Abernathy won the Hunger Games. He was the second victor from District 12 and the only living victor when Katniss and Peeta won with his mentorship during the 74th Hunger Games.
Prior to Sunrise on the Reaping, Suzanne teased Haymitch’s Hunger Games in Catching Fire. To “celebrate” the 50th Hunger Games, four children were reaped from each district instead of only the standard two tributes.
In a statement to the Associated Press about the new book, Suzanne , “With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by [Scottish philosopher] David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.'”

She continued, saying, “The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.”
And, alongside the new book announcement, Lionsgate, the studio behind the previous The Hunger Games movies, that an adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping will hit theaters on Nov. 20, 2026.

how it feels to have a fifth hunger games book to analyse suzanne collins’ political undertones, dissect her brutal hit on the western world and their agendas & see the blatant propaganda that is fed to us by today’s elite…all mirrored back at us in fiction pic.twitter.com/LQFkxs7gPB

Suzanne Collins really does the whole “successful author” thing the best. Makes her money, disappears, drops a surprise book every once in a while. Well done.

reminder that suzanne collins herself has said that she only writes these books when she has something to say. it’s not lost on me that sunrise on the reaping is about the power of propaganda and PR, and how it distorts our belief in our own reality.

this genuinely is going to be so fucking SAD to read because the 50th hunger games were where 47 tributes died. every single thing in the arena was poisonous, and haymitch and maysilee have their big scene together… pic.twitter.com/SSnOhDdyjj

and when we get a scene of the 4 tributes from district 12 wondering why they got a capitol mentor assigned and some tribute says “but my parents told me there was a victor from 12 some decades ago.. lucy or something. why isn’t she here?” pic.twitter.com/HT5UWF4nhF

“woody harrelson cameo as older haymitch in the new movie” i say into the mic. the crowd boos and i begin to walk off the stage in shame. “she’s right” two voices say. i look around for the owner. there they stand in the first row. woody harrelson and suzanne collins themselves.
