Interview with the Vampire star Sam Reid has teased a major change from the book will happen in season 2, indicating it will be a key twist for the story. Season 1 adapted the first half of Anne Rice’s original novel of the same name, with some changes to give the story a more modernized feel. However, the overall structure of the story remained the same, indicating season 2 would follow a similar path in adapting the rest of the novel.
However, speaking with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Reid – who portrays Lestat in the series – teased that Interview with the Vampire season 2 will include a major departure from the novel. The actor says that, while the twist had him cautious at first, it ultimately worked by reflecting ideas included in later books from The Vampire Chronicles series. Check out what Reid had to say about the upcoming change below:
There’s a really f*****g cool twist in this season that is not in the books that I struggled with because I was like, ‘This is different, and I’m not sure.’ But actually, you can justify it because when you look at the books and look at the way that they come out, and what happens in subsequent books after season 1, there is a level of an unreliable element. You don’t always have to know the truth, because Anne Rice never really tells you the truth. She likes to change it up a bit.
What Could Interview With The Vampire’s Big Twist Be?
Season 1 Already Made Changes To The Book
Season 1 of the horror series ended with a twist of its own, revealing Louis’ servant Rashid is actually Armand, and the pair are romantically engaged with one another. This twist doesn’t happen in the novel, already indicating that season 2 may stray from the story on the page. However, promotional material for the series indicates it will contain most of the book’s familiar elements, such as Santiago’s Théâtre des Vampires and Lestat’s return through the coven. It will also explain more about Louis and Daniel Molloy’s first encounter in 1973.
Given Reid is the one teasing the show’s upcoming twist, it’s likely the new events that transpire involve Lestat to some extent. The series’ trailer shows him acting during a production put on by the Théâtre, indicating his time in the coven prior to demanding Claudia’s death is going to be lengthier than it was in the novel. The actor speaking about unreliability in the narrative also indicates the events Louis iterates to Daniel may not end up being the truth, leading to these events unfolding differently than in the original book.
While Interview with the Vampire season 2’s book moments will likely still happen in different ways, it’s clear now that some events are going to be different and unpredictable for readers watching the show. These alterations could be made so the series continues beyond season 2, perhaps adapting future books in The Vampire Chronicles series, like The Vampire Lestat or The Queen of the Damned. With plenty of mystery still surrounding what the twist could be, it seems possible the twist will involve Lestat and his involvement in the overarching narrative of the series.
