New Children’s Book Takes Advantage Of Storytelling’s Face-To-Face Connection

Children learn best when they are spoken to directly, better even than when they are read to. So I wrote a book of stories in mostly oral English, with an introduction encouraging parents to learn the stories themselves and then tell, not read, them to their children

“Children learn best when they are spoken to directly, better even than when they are read to. So I wrote a book of stories in mostly oral English, with an introduction encouraging parents to learn the stories themselves and then tell, not read, them to their children,” said Edgar.

William Edgar began life in the Bronx, with summers spent on a farm in the Catskill Mountains, and eventually relocated to Drexel Hill, a suburb of Philadelphia. He attended Swarthmore College (1968) and the University of Pennsylvania (History Ph.D. 1980). After four years living Cyprus and another in Greece, he and his family returned to Pennsylvania. Edgar taught mathematics at East High School in West Chester (30 years), and pastored Broomall Reformed Presbyterian Church (34 years). After retiring as a pastor and teacher, he spent a year as the interim president of Geneva College near Pittsburgh. Edgar and his wife Gretchen have five children and seventeen grandchildren and live in Drexel Hill.
