The Green Howards Museum will be hosting the launch of a new history book on the Green Howards in the First World War on Saturday.
Military historian, John Sheen, an expert on the Green Howards Regiment, will be joined by specialist regimental researcher, Steve Erskine, for an afternoon of drinks and canapes, history talk, and an exclusive book signing of John’s latest work, The Green Howards in the Great War, published by Pen and Sword Books.
With attention focused on the regiment’s connections to Yorkshire and the North East, John’s book follows the progress of recruits who came from Middlesbrough, the area around the ironstone mines on the North Yorkshire moors, the East Durham coalfield and the Durham City area.
Forming the 8th and 9th Battalions, the division left Richmond’s Regimental Depot in September 1914 and progressed to the Battle of the Somme in 1916 where two men distinguished themselves with Victoria Crosses for bravery – Lieutenant Donald Simpson Bell and Private William Short.
The division was then deployed to Italy in 1917 before the 9th Battalion returned to France in 1918.
John’s story of the 8th and 9th Battalions provides a local voice from far-flung, foreign locations in the maelstrom of international conflict.
Speaking of the upcoming event, chief executive officer, Emma Woods said: ‘It’s an honour to be hosting the launch of the latest book on the Green Howards and we’re looking forward to a wonderful afternoon of chat with Steve and John.
“The ticket includes a signed copy of the book so this is a great opportunity to be the first to read this exciting new work.’
