New Manic Street Preachers book of unseen Valerie Phillips photos announced

Manic Street Preachers have announced details of a new book of previously unseen Valerie Phillips photographs of the band, titled Little Baby Nothings.

The book will feature over 200 photographs taken by the artist in 1991 and 1992, around the time of the release of their debut album ‘Generation Terrorists’.

It’ll be released on June 28 via Longer Moon Farther and limited to 2000 copies, with the first 100 orders receiving a signed copy. There will also be a limited t-shirt bundle available. Pre-order it here.

Discussing the project, bassist Nicky Wire said: “We thought these photos were lost but they are found, and I’m so grateful to Valerie for those intense 20 months when she saw all the energy and ragged glory of Manic Street Preachers, and more importantly captured our little bit of history seen here in these vivid, beautiful photographs.”

The band granted Phillips access over an extended period of time in the early ‘90s, at a time when they were breaking through into the mainstream. They forged a lasting relationship, with her images going on to be used on the sleeve of 2007 album ‘Send Away The Tigers’.

“When I was a baby photographer obsessed with records and seeing bands, I was asked to get a train to a small town in Wales to take pictures of Manic Street Preachers,” Phillips added.

“I hadn’t yet figured out how to take the kind of pictures I wanted to take. So I made it up. That day. With the beautiful Manics. We were both in our own starting-out all-consuming little worlds and now those worlds collided.”

The band are also set to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their 1994 album ‘The Holy Bible’ with a one-off screening of the concert film BePure-BeVigilant-Behave.

On August 30, on the exact anniversary of the album’s original release, the film will be shown at the Picturehouse Central cinema in London. It will then be followed by a Q&A with bassist Nicky Wire alongside Evans. You can get your tickets here.

They will also be heading out on a UK and Ireland joint headline tour with Suede, with the two bands taking it in turns to play last at each show. The shows kick off on June 28 at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, and run up to July 19 at Margate’s Dreamland. Find any remaining tickets here.
