Characters from popular children’s storybook The Gruffalo are being “brought to life” at a series of events in East Yorkshire.

The much-loved story, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, was first published in 1999.

The events, which feature puppetry, are part of celebrations to mark the book’s 25th anniversary.

The sessions, being held at libraries and community hubs, are free but booking is essential, organisers said.

The book has sold more than 13 million copies, winning several prizes for children’s literature, and has been adapted into plays on the West End and Broadway, and an Oscar-nominated animated film.

East Riding Libraries is working with Beverley-based Puppets, Plays & Story Days to offer a new way of experiencing the story.

Librarian Kimberley Harston said: “The Gruffalo is a firm favourite amongst both staff and customers, so we are really excited to be able to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this iconic story.”

Nick Coultish, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said the events would “bring the characters from The Gruffalo to life”.

The sessions are most suitable for those aged three to seven.
