Delta Kappa Gamma announces 2024 Literary Contest winners, scholarship recipients | Washington Co. News


HARTFORD — The Alpha Beta Chapter (ABC) of Delta Kappa Gamma (DGK), a professional international organization of key women educators, recently honored the winners of their 2024 Literary Contest and their 2024 scholarship recipients.

According to the release, the ABC honored their 2024 Literary Contest winners during a ceremony and reception at Peace Lutheran Church in Hartford on May 13. The contest, for 3rdthrough 12th-graders, is a book writing contest. The first place-winning books are then submitted to the state level competition.

The ABC received 86 books for judging from 3rdthrough 9th-grade students in Washington County. This year’s local level winners:

3rd grade 1st place — “The Big Game” by Lily Beth Duthie (Peace Lutheran School) 2nd place — “Oliver’s Monster” by Felicity Sternig (Holy Angels School) Honorable Mention — “Paco the Neighborhood Cat” by Molly O’Keefe (Peace Lutheran School) Illustrator Award — “Oliver’s Monster” by Felicity Sternig (Holy Angels School) and “A Mermaid’s Place” by Laurelei Wolf (Peace Lutheran School)

4th grade 1st place — “Hiking Adventure with Grandma” by Levi Duthie (Peace Lutheran School) *This book was named a Honorable Mention-winner in the state level competition* 2nd place — “The Milkman” by Benjamin Andrews (Peace Lutheran School) Honorable Mention — “The Lost Dog” by Allyson Fiedler (Peace Lutheran School)

5th grade 1st place — “The Summer Twist” by Layla Deppert (Holy Angels School) 2nd place — “The Christmas Hotel” by Camille Miofsky (Holy Angels School) Honorable Mention — “Surviving Middle School” by Averie Spaeth (Holy Angels School), “The Switchoroo” by Amelia Hall (St. John’s Lutheran School), “Saddle Up” by Paige Ruback (St. John’s Lutheran School), “The Mushroom Princess” by Kaleigh Fochs (Silverbrook Intermediate School) and “In the Future” by Maggie Wright (Kewaskum Elementary School)

6th grade 1st place — “Dogs of the North” by Meadow Sagan (Silverbrook Intermediate School) 2nd place — “The Full Story of Super Mango” by Andrew Riley (Silverbrook Intermediate School) Honorable Mention — “Postie Penguin” by Macy Custer (Silverbrook Intermediate School), “The Metal Tree” by Lucas Helm (Silverbrook Intermediate School) and “The Boy with the Blues” by Josie Kletzine (Silverbrook Intermediate School) Illustrator Award — “Postie Penguin” by Macy Custer (Silverbrook Intermediate School), “The Metal Tree” by Lucas Helm (Silverbrook Intermediate School), “The Boy with the Blues” by Josie Kletzine (Silverbrook Intermediate School) and “Dodging Dinos” by Eli Ressler (Silverbrook Intermediate School)

7th grade 1st place — “The Cleric” by Josiah Rockrohr (St. John’s Lutheran School) 2nd place — “Hidden Beauty” by Addison Hall (St. John’s Lutheran School) Honorable Mention — “The Boys and Their Boat” by Austin Ladd (St. John’s Lutheran School), “Our World” by Andrew Aleithe (St. John’s Lutheran School) and “Auggie’s Tail” by Hadley Buettner (St. John’s Lutheran School)

8th grade 1st place — “Too Many Skeletons” by Eva Schloemer (St. John’s Lutheran School)

9th grade 1st Place — “The Power of a Friend” by Kaitlyn Wendelborn (Kewaskum High School)

2024 scholarship recipients The ABC distributed two scholarships, one to Kewaskum High School senior Katelyn Scannell and another to Hartford Union High School senior Brady Senkbeil.

According to the release, Scannell received a scholarship for $750, which will go toward her pursuit of a degree in elementary education at UW-Oshkosh.

Senkbeil received a $500 scholarship, in memory of former ABC members Janet Heder and Billie Schalla who both passed away in 2023. He will pursue a degree in special education at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
