New Hunger Games Book Sunrise on the Reaping to Become Movie in 2026

Another Hunger Games movie is on the way.

Lionsgate announced June 6 that the newly revealed book from author Suzanne Collins, her fifth in the bestselling series, will get a big-screen adaptation.

“Welcome to the Second Quarter Quell. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping – in theaters November 20, 2026,” read a post on Instagram.

Francis Lawrence is in talks to direct the movie after having helmed four previous films in the franchise.

The novel, out March 18, 2025, “will revisit the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell,” per a synopsis.

Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a press release, “Suzanne Collins is a master storyteller and our creative north star. We couldn’t be more fortunate than to be guided and trusted by a collaborator whose talent and imagination are so consistently brilliant.”

“We know Hunger Games fans worldwide will be spellbound by where Suzanne has focused this next extraordinary story,” added Fogelson. “The Second Quarter Quell is legendary and looms large over the history of the Games, even into the time of Katniss Everdeen a quarter-century later. Like fans around the globe, we are eagerly anticipating this exciting return to Panem.”

The prequel book The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was released in 2020, and the movie hit theaters in 2023, starring Rachel Zegler and Tom Blyth. That story took place 64 years before the events of The Hunger Games.

Jennifer Lawrence starred as Katniss Everdeen in four Hunger Games films from 2012 to 2015.
